The Link--Winter 2008 Jennifer
Laughlin--President's Message (continues)
STRATEGIC “BIG ROCKS”
1. EHR
- The
Leadership Conference Team
- This
team put on a very successful e-Discovery workshop in November. The
evaluations were very positive, as this topic seems like a “hot” one.
Discussions are in place to add this topic as a chapter in future versions
of the Legal Resource Manual.
- The
myPHR Team
- AHIMA
rolled out a new national myPHR campaign in October.
Peg Schmidt and Chrisann Lemery forwarded
WHIMA
’s presenters an article on PHRs that appeared in the Kenosha News.
AHIMA was mentioned along with their website.
Peg Schmidt attended the Gateway Tech College Advisory committee meeting
and discussed how we might partner with the college to introduce the PHR
concept to their students and faculty. Peg reports they would definitely
like to explore this and have some presentations given. This is beyond
just the HIT class, but to other health programs as well. John Lynch was
present and would like to explore this for UWM as well.
Peg is looking for volunteers who would do the presentations
and work with John Lynch,
Cindy Fickenscher
and her to develop the idea. They have health fairs as well that this
would fit into. Please contact
Peg if interested.
-
WHIMA
’s Marketing Team will be
working with this team as they have identified the PHR campaign as an area
for focus. There will be a conference call to discuss ideas/strategies
- The
e-Health Board
- HISPC
activities have continued, with the work group concluding its assignment
to propose changes to Wisconsin Statutes 146 and 51.30
(the 146 recommendations have been posted on the
WHIMA
CoP) and will be submitted to the eHealth Board at the December meeting.
- There
is still considerable dissent surrounding 51.30, mainly with the mental
health advocates. The eHealth Board to date has shown great interest in
placing patient safety first.
2. Engagement
- The
Recruitment Team
- The
volunteer and new graduate recruitment teams were combined this year.
Several of our board members are diligently working to understand the
issues surrounding dwindling recruitment and clinical placement numbers.
We look forward to their results in working to improve!

Building
- The
Marketing Team
- Speaking
of the marketing team…this is a new one we created this year. Through
the strategic planning process, we discovered so many opportunities to
“market”, not only the HIM profession but
WHIMA
.
- The
team is focusing on two major objectives:
- Sponsor
WHIMA
to other associations:
- We
will be present at two association meetings this year. The goal will
be to exhibit as well as speak, if possible.
- The
team will be working with Laurie Schimek to developing the theme for
the exhibits.
- The
two associations identified are HIMSS and the State Medical Society.
Cheryl Becker attended this fall’s HIMSS meeting on behalf of
WHIMA
. Thank you!
- The
second objective is to get the word out about the myPHR campaign. The
marketing team will work with the myPHR team.
- One
of the campaign goals is to encourage all members of
WHIMA
to lead the way in the creation of PHRs. We will be developing helping
tips to do so. Stay tuned for more information!
- The
Link Team
-
WHIMA
members continue to comment that they like the new printer-friendly
version.
- The
E-communications Team
- The
e-communications team continues to work on archiving the previous issues
and hopes to place this issue on the web site soon.
4. Preparing the
Workforce
- The
Annual Conference and Fall Conference Teams
- The
Fall Conference team had a very successful meeting this past fall in the
WI Dells. The Annual Conference Team is right on track and has an
abundance of excellent topics to present this spring!! It is going to be
one of the best! Keep looking for details out soon! For details, go to
www.whima.org.
- The
Spirit Team
- This
team is responsible for our ‘fun’, especially at the annual
conference. They seem to out do themselves every year.
5. Organization and
Financial Management
- The
Scholarship Team
- This
team reviewed applications and awarded one scholarship this year.
- The
Legal Resource Team
- 2007
update to be completed in December.
- The
Professional Practice Manual Team
- This
team worked very hard in 2007 to make major edits and additions to this
manual. They are available for purchase through
WHIMA
.
I know I haven’t covered all the activities on all the teams…but, I am sure
you can see that we have been incredibly busy in 2007…2008 doesn’t look any
less busy. We love it and wouldn’t have it any other way…actually, I take
that back…what we would love even more is more volunteers on the work teams.
We are always looking for more creative and task-oriented members to work with
us to accomplish the goals of
WHIMA
. If anyone is interested, please let me know. Enjoy your new year…I’ll be
in touch soon!
