Cardiovascular Clinical Reviewer

The Cardiovascular Clinical Reviewer (CCR) is responsible for the collection and submission of accurate and reliable data to cardiac procedural, interventional, and surgical registries including ACTION-GWTG Registry, Cath PCI Registry, ICD Registry, STS National Database, and STS/ACC TVT Registry. The CCR works closely with the members of the Departments of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement. The CCR also works closely with system process and performance improvement leaders to set and achieve goals related to identified opportunities. This position requires clinical knowledge, robust experience with computer software and web applications, experience gathering information in a complex tertiary care environment, and comfort sharing data and information with clinical, performance/process improvement, and administrative teams.
- Data collection and reporting: 1. Identifies patients for inclusion in the various registries through the application of program inclusion/exclusion criteria and protocols; 2. Collects preoperative/pre-procedural, operative/procedural, and postoperative/post-procedural data components for the appropriate registry through the effective utilization of the electronic health record
- Data collection and reporting: 3. Demonstrates applicability of the methodology and the reliability of definitions utilized by reviewers within the program through Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) testing; 4. Identifies process improvement opportunities in the data collection process and works with Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery Champions and informatics teams to recommend documentation templates, smart phrases, and other relevant documentation formats;
- Data collection and reporting: 5. Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the registry; 6. Utilizes software applications for data collection and analysis;
- Data collection and reporting: 7. Enters accurate and timely data into the registry database and meets the caseload accrual requirement protocol; 8. Participates in the validation of data according to registry submission timelines.
- Participation in performance/process improvement initiatives: 1. Analyzes standard and ad hoc reports to compare hospital performance against benchmark; 2. Collaborates with members of the Departments of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery to identify improvement opportunities and priorities;
- Participation in performance/process improvement initiatives: 3. Serves as data expert on performance/process improvement teams; as data expert interprets registry and other clinical data for the team; 4. Develops ad hoc reports to track and trend improvements in surgical outcomes and quality of care.
- Work effectively with patients, families, and hospital stakeholders: 1. Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in Cardiology, Cardiovascular Surgery, Nursing, Health Information Management, and Health Information Technology Departments;
- Work effectively with patients, families, and hospital stakeholders: 2. According to registry requirements, contacts patients and/or families via telephone and/or written communications postoperatively for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with interventional and surgical procedures performed at the hospital;
- Participation in ongoing education: 1. Complete the data abstraction training program as identified by the relevant registry(s);

- Performs other job duties as assigned.
- Computer, internet, and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) expertise is required
- Ability to complete all pre-training, on-site training, and post-training; ability to build relationships across disciplines and gain alignment for cardiovascular and vascular outcomes and quality of care
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with a minimum of 5-years of experience in the care of cardiac procedural and/or cardiovascular surgical patients or a Bachelor’s Degree in a health informatics field and a minimum of 5 years of experience managing cardiovascular patient registries is preferred
- Certification in the use of lean and six sigma improvement methodologies are highly desired
- Microsoft Access and PowerPoint experience is preferred
- Experience with database entry/management is preferred
- Basic statistical knowledge is preferred
- Experience with quality/process improvement methodologies and/or patient safety knowledge is preferred
- Applicants with an Associate Degree in Nursing or related clinical field and a minimum of 10 years of experience in the care of cardiac procedural, vascular procedural, and/or cardiovascular surgical patients will be considered.
