The Coder II – Hospital reviews patient medical record documentation and assigns, sequences ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes, when applicable, to Inpatient accounts and calculates MS-DRGs utilizing the TruCode encoder software, abiding by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and in compliance with official coding guidelines and other regulatory requirements. Communicates with providers when needed to obtain complete and specific documentation in order to accurately assign codes. Follows compliant physician query processes. Works closely Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Specialists. Follows-up and obtains clarification on charge issues. Maintains department standards for timely coding completion.
One to two years of acute care hospital inpatient coding experience.
Certification Required: CCS (Certified Coding Specialist – AHIMA) or CIC (Certified Inpatient Coder – AAPC) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technologist -AHIMA)
Solid knowledge of ICD-10-CM Diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS Procedural Coding Classification Systems, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. Solid understanding of reimbursement systems and payment methodologies (MS-DRGs).
Two + years of acute care hospital inpatient coding experience.
Experience with the Epic Electronic Health Record system and the TruCode Encoder is a plus.
Experience with Clinical Documentation Improvement processes.
Required: Coding Diploma/Certificate from an accredited school.
Preferred: Associates Degree in Health Information Technology
