Coding Specialist – Inpatient – Remote (WI, IL, MO, or OK)

Job Description:

The Coding Specialist, under the supervision of the Coding Manager, is responsible for coding and abstracting inpatient accounts in accordance with coding guidelines.


  • Proficiently codes complex inpatient medical and surgical cases including charts with higher than average total dollar amounts.
  • Applies classification systems of diagnoses and procedures to reflect the significant aspects of a patient’s hospital encounter. Applies the Standards of Ethical Coding developed by the American Health Information Management Association Council on Coding and Classification. HIM Coding staff will code in accordance with the facility’s coding guidelines consistent with The ICD-10-CM-Official Guidelines promulgated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the National Center for Health Statistics, the American Medical Association and the American Health Information Management Association.
  • Assures grouping which will provide optimal payment to which the facility is legally entitled.  Generates coding queries so that documentation reflects the care of the patient and improves the overall quality of the physician documentation in the medical record.
  • Verifies the appropriateness of the Attending and Consulting physicians entered by Analyst staff. Verifies the appropriateness of the discharge disposition entered by the Analyst staff.
  • Ensures the accuracy of Present on Admission indicators.
  • Appropriately sequences codes to ensure an accurate DRG and analyzes this assignment for appropriateness.

Required Qualifications:

  • One of the following credentials is required:  RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Associates Degree in Health Information Technology preferred.
  • Minimum of one-year coding experience.
  • Hospital Inpatient Coding experience. Experience in the use of Microsoft Office with advanced skills in Excel. Completion of an accredited coding course covering ICD10 and CPT.

Education Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Associates Degree in Health Information Technology preferred.
