Job Description:

Plans, directs and coordinates the operational activities of the health information management department. Ensures productivity standards are met and caregivers are producing a quality product for the medical groups.

Supervises the day-to-day operations of the health information managements department. Develops prioritization and work assignment scheduling mechanisms to allow for optimal use of staff time, achievement of operating indicators, and monitoring of work in progress to ensure timely turnaround times.

Represents the department as a point person for any department specific issues, and communicates information and needs to the health information team as appropriate.

Develops, revises and maintains department policies and procedures for service, quality, efficiency and appropriate utilization of resources.

Reports on key department quality, service and productivity indicators on a regular basis. Utilizes performance improvement techniques to streamline operations and improve quality and service.

Monitors compliance with regulatory bodies’ documentation requirements and safety. Maintains current on knowledge and understanding of privacy, confidentiality, and release of information issues, advising staff on specific issues or changes as they occur.

Assures that the health information records are kept confidential, secure, current, authenticated, legible and complete. Responsible for all the automated systems to ensure timely and accurate health information records.

Serves as liaison to equipment and software providers, troubleshoots existing equipment problems, and follows through in the appropriate maintenance of such equipment.

Assists in developing and adhering to operating and capital budgets and controlled expenditures.

Required Qualifications:

Licenses & Certifications

Health Information Technician (RHIT) registration issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or

Health Information Administrator (RHIA) registration issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Required Functional Experience

Typically requires 3 years of experience in health information within a complex health care setting including experience in a lead or senior level staff role.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of health information documentation, regulatory requirements, privacy, state and federal laws and statutes.Demonstrated leadership skills including problem solving, decision making, delegation, prioritization, team building, time management, quality improvement techniques, customer service, and conflict resolution. Excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation, analytical and organization skills. Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with physicians, staff, and leaders. Ability to work across department and management lines in a positive manner to achieve site and department goals.Intermediate computer skills including experience in use of Microsoft Office or similar products.

Education Qualifications:

Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management or related field.
