Job Description:

The Coding Team Lead will code, monitor coding staff workflow, evaluate the work of other coding staff, and develop and conduct staff training as necessary. The Team Lead will need to be able to evaluate records and prepare reports on documentation or coding issues for review by management. The role also makes recommendations for changes in policies and procedures, guidelines and training programs related to coding.

The Coding Team Lead will have an extensive knowledge in the coding assignment of CPT, E&M, ICD-9 and/or ICD -10 codes for each patient visit type, diagnosis and medical procedure performed; requiring knowledge of disease process to assure the proper code is assigned. Extensive education in anatomy and physiology of the human body and the knowledge of medical procedures, medical specialty modalities, pathological conditions, and the treatment processes is necessary for the role. The position assigns codes related to the procedure or treatment performed utilizing classification systems software based on one of several hundred “diagnosis-related groups,” or DRG.  In addition to the DRG system, coders use other coding systems, such as those required for ambulatory services, and apply the same knowledge in assigning CPT codes and the APC reimbursement methodology.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s degree and/or coding certificate preferred.
  • At least 2 years (with 4 or more preferred) experience in professional coding required.
  • Experience in primary care coding strongly preferred.
  • Epic experience preferred.
  • 1 or more of the following certifications required: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA); Registered Health Information Tech (RHIT); Certified Coding Specialist (CCS); Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
